Ryan Tahope is ready to talk.

Now that's a great song. Maverick's visual effects were nominated for an Academy Award, and the team behind them couldn't be more proud of their amazing work, with head of visual effects Tuhope finally revealing how the team achieved the basics of visual effects, but what's more important. , 2400 frame computer graphics.

As revealed at the Academy Museum's Visual Effects "Competition" last month, Art Professional Method (now part of Framestore), MPC and LOLA took on different tasks to keep the film's hands-on spirit alive. They combine mosaic imagery with spectacular aerial shots and acrobatics of Tom Cruise flying in the cockpit of a Navy fighter jet. The planes look like real planes in aerial photos. Navy pilots tossed six Sony Venice cameras attached to the actors' Rialto camera deployment system from the plane. The VFX provided dark graphics, environments, sky changes and lots of gunfire and explosions for the final bombardment.

Although it has many CGI elements similar to conventional Hollywood blockbusters, it also aims to expand on these filmmaking practices. "We always try to make work that is very soft and invisible, that people don't talk about or think about," Tuhop told IndieWire.

"Our approach was to try to capture practical moments and photograph the actual aircraft, then use the resources of our fleet to tell the story and use those things as filmmakers to tell the story." According to Tadhope, Maverick allowed him to "create visual effects" that no other film could. These resources and support.

At least 2020. Visuals This collaboration between ASC Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (who surprisingly lost to the Academy), Navy pilots, flight coordinators and others has restored the picture to its former glory. "You're trying to be subtle, you're trying to make interesting pictures," Tudhop said. "It's not that you don't want to be in a great movie with a great view, but I think your chains are in those movies because they can bite you."

Watch the opening scene where Todd Hope Maverick (Tom Cruise) pushes the Darkstar test plane to its limits to demonstrate how the collaboration uses the visual effects process. Dark Star doesn't exist in real life. It was specially designed for the film, and footage of him flying in the cockpit was shot on set. "We knew the Maverick would shoot really well with this gimbal, but we still wanted to get it out into the world," said F-18 Flight Attendant.

THE SOLUTION "Sometimes we put this drone behind the Darkstar cockpit to clear the back panel and control the drone from the back seat," Tudhop said. "At that time, the best analogy for that historical situation is the F-18, right? It was our same plane and it was doing the same maneuvers at the same speed and speed. We chose it. Take this back panel off.

"Honestly, I think in the beginning we had to put a lot of puzzle pieces together and try to figure out how to get the equipment and everything that we needed," he said. "The footage in this film is about what we do inside and outside the computer."

This marriage of practical and digital was more of a challenge for the visual effects team than a simple decision to post all the images. The result is accuracy, because accuracy depends on flight technique and reality. Throughout the production, it was a top-down process, with the support of the crew and pilot. An added advantage of aerial photography is the use of limitations and imperfections. For example, when the pilots had trouble balancing the frame for an attack, they figured it out in the second take and the VFX team was able to complete the frame without redoing it on the computer. There were also wonderful moments of joy. One such moment occurred when the Dark Star flew over Ed Harris and crashed in front of the security room. His first task was to recapture the guard house and shoot it. But he played well and was brought back.

The films most intensive use of CGI is dramatic explosions and bowl turns that require digital shots, environments and explosions. But it was filmed in Washington state's Cascade Range, with newsreel footage and unseen effects that made the disaster even more interesting.

"There were all kinds of investigations," Tudhop said. "But mostly it depends on the exact place where it is filmed and we put the same restrictions on the rest of the film."

Is there room for joy? "Yes," said Thudop. That's all we're talking about. On the other hand, a team of very talented visual effects designers who created all the footage on the computer are so complex that you can't miss the fun.

"These shots are so perfect, so realistic and so weightless," he said. "Using this method has a lot of problems. After all, when you try to capture the pilot in a real plane with a real pilot, a real pilot, a real operator and a real plane, you run into this huge technical challenge. ."
